A Brief Testimony of Stephen's Life

Stephen was born in 1943 in a black township on the outskirts of Salisbury, Rhodesia, now Harare, Zimbabwe, to a 14-year old bride and her 50-year old husband from Malawi. At age 7 Stephen was abandoned by his mother in a marketplace and left with his younger brother and infant sister. He was moved around among relatives' homes and an orphanage for a number of years, until at age 10 he finally left and struck out on his own.

To survive, Stephen slept under bridges and scavenged food from white folks’ garbage cans. As an illiterate teenager he was recruited into one of the urban gangs, called the Black Shadows, which ran a program of theft and thuggery with a half-focused dream of revolution. At age 19 Stephen and his gang were headed off to blow up a bank when they came across a big tent where an evangelistic meeting was being held. When he learned that it was being run by South African Christians, he decided to have his gang blow up the tent and kill everyone fleeing, to teach them a “lesson” for the years of brainwashing, discrimination, and brutality he thought blacks had suffered at the hands of Christians.

While waiting the five minutes for the time set for the slaughter, he went into the tent to hear what was going on. In those two minutes, his life was forever changed! That was in 1962. Out of the Black Shadows tells the full story of this remarkable work of the Holy Spirit, and what subsequently happened to Stephen Lungu. He is an extraordinary evangelist and now African Enterprise’s new International Team Leader, taking over from Michael Cassidy in August 2006.
